I was so excited about Zaption that I blogged about it before I even tried it with my students. Now that I've had a chance to use it in my classroom, I can expand my thoughts. I think the self-paced, individual experience that a Zaption tour provides is great for students, particularly because it allows students to spend extra time if they need to, to move back, repeat the video, or skip ahead. But I found that I missed the whole class viewing experience. I'd like to be able to screen the entire clip first with the whole class and then send them off on the Zaption tour but that might not always be possible, depending on the length of the video. The self-pace, independent aspect of the tour also makes me think that perhaps this is a great tool for flipping the classroom. Have the students complete the Zaption tour outside of class as pre-work. It could also be a homework experience, underscoring whatever what discussed in class that day.
The analytics are fascinating and are what makes this such a powerful tool. I am able to login and see all sorts of data about the students who took the tour, both global data (average viewing time, skips forward, skips backward, questions answered, etc.) as well as individual student responses to questions. There's also a way to download responses as a csv file. Depending on the type of questions answered, this would make it easy to drop the data into a spreadsheet or other file and grade it.
